Hinderwood, California… a small town with a big name. Jada almost felt herself jumping up and down in her seat. She was supposed to be a teenager, but right now she felt like a little girl again. Jada was 15 at the time and Tyler was 16, though at most times it seemed the other way around. Driving past the welcome sign, Jada’s spirits lifted even more. It said, “Welcome to Hinderwood California, home of the top Derby Racers”. Their mom said it would be good for them, living in an area that only praised Derby Racing. Their dad said it was only because of his work and that it was stupid. He had a high position in Government Financials, though we were all mystified about why we were moving to Hinderwood for financials. Tyler was in between and doubted their parents decision. And Jada thought of the California Tigers Derpy Racing Team with her name on their jersey every single time Hinderwood came to mind. It was her dream team and now that she lived in a drafting area, she felt like she was riding the dream boat. They drove down the main street and watched the people outside, everybody had rollerblades and it made Jada feel like she belonged. Until she saw the people’s faces outside of their tinted windows, stopping to stare at the shiny and expensive car.

What a great first impression… Jada thought, she didn’t want to be seen as the snotty rich girl who bought herself into the AAA Team.

Jada and Tyler had tried out for the AA team a month prior, when they were asked to move up to the AAA team instead. Finally, they arrived to their driveway and stopped the car.

“Oh, can you believe it?! We’re finally here, George!” their mother smiled, looking at their dad.

“Now, don’t you get too excited. I don’t want any spirits being lifted up here, they just create false hope,” their father replied bluntly.

“So we’re just supposed to let them think that moving isn’t a good thing?”

“It’s not, Cathy.”

“Of course it is! They get to make new friends and live through different experiences, it is a great learning curve!” she argued.

“Mom, we’re not 10 years old anymore. It’s been 6 years since our last move, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t know what it feels like…” Jada interrupted the conversation.

Tyler grunted, opening the car and climbing out. He was taller than Jada, like, a head taller. Jada, quickly followed him. Realizing that it probably wasn’t a good thing to butt in like that, she tried to get out of the web that she caught herself in. They both walked up to a big house, tall and wide. It looked a bit old with a modern touch.

“I think it’s cool,” Jada nudged Tyler.

“Oh, yeah… definitely the coolest house I’ve ever seen…” he smirked.

“I can’t tell if you’re joking or not,” she reluctantly looked at him.

“Come on, let's go find our rooms…” he started inside, hurriedly opening the door.

They ran up the stairs and walked into each room, pointing out the master bedroom and the three extra bedrooms aside. Jada had a liking to one that had a large window with a ledge and a hatch to the attic right outside the door. Luckily, Tyler didn’t find that one appealing and picked one with two windows and no ledges. Which he didn’t mind at all, in fact he was more interested in the really high ceiling. Soon enough, the mover people that their parents hired were upstairs and unloading boxes. They asked which room they should put certain boxes in, but nothing else.

“Tyler! Jada! Come down stairs please!” their mom called.

Jada pranced down the stairs, carrying her skates. Tyler slunk down the flight of rectangles carrying nothing but an old hoodie. They met up with their mother as she was directing other movers to the right places with the right things.

“Finally…” she mumbled as she looked up from some paperwork to see us.

“What, mom?” Jada asked.

Their mother looked a little closer to what Jada was carrying and then went back to staring at her papers.

“You and Tyler should go out to lunch, get away from your old mother here and get a head start on making friends. You have a whole summer to catch up on things around here,” she suggested.

“Actually, I was going to ride around on my skates.” Jada adjusted the idea.

“Well, then you can ride your skates around afterwards. While making friends,” she finished, taking herself away from the conversation.

Tyler went on walking first and opened the door leading into the garage. He was humming to himself as he climbed onto his motorcycle. He must have known that his bike had already been there, or else he wouldn’t have been as confident opening the garage door. Jada sat behind him, cautious of any sudden movement.

“Are you sure we should be doing this?” Jada asked, wrapping her arms around his waist.

He clutched the handles and grinned, “Why not?” Jada rolled her eyes.

I’m going to regret this, aren’t I?
she thought as he started the engine.

We rode off, on our way to whatever fast food diner came up first.
I'm going at least a few more chapters on this one.
